New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA), The Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC), and the Canadian Music Centre (CMC) are pleased to announce the 10th edition of the Toronto International Electroacoustic Symposium (TIES), and delighted to welcome multifaceted artist John Oswald as Keynote Speaker this year. Governor General award-winning and prolific media artist, composer and saxophonist, John Oswald is known for his famous Plunderphonics recordings among a host of other engaging and original projects.

The symposium will take place in Toronto from 10–13 August 2016 at Geary Lane and at the Canadian Music Centre.

Solar Impulse: Zero-fuel plane lands in Cairo

The Sun-powered aircraft Solar Impulse has finished its penultimate flight, landing in Egypt’s capital, Cairo.

It took off from the Spanish city of Seville at 04:20 GMT on Monday, taking just over 48 hours to make the trip.

The zero-fuel aircraft is now in the home straight of its bid to circumnavigate the globe.

Its final stop is Abu Dhabi, where the challenge began in March 2015. The two pilots sharing flying duties are each taking one more turn at the controls.

Andre Borschberg did the Seville-Cairo stage, soaring over the pyramids and the Sphinx at Giza before landing.

This Day God Gives Me (Bunessan) [harp]

BUNESSAN is a Gaelic tune that was first published (melody only) in Lachlan Macbean’s Songs and Hymns of the Gael (1888) as a setting for Mary Macdonald’s carol “Child in the Manger.”, already 200 years old.    The tune is named after Macdonald’s birthplace on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. “Bunessan” (This Day God Gives Me) is also well known as the setting for Eleanor Farjeon’s poem “Morning Has Broken” (1931), published in many hymnals and widely popularized by Cat Stevens, who recorded an arrangement of the
tune in 1971.

EAR TRAINING I
Pitch, Rhythm, & Loudness, Cf for Linda, 4 Nov 2015

Ear training is a hearing skill in which musicians learn to identify pitches, intervals, chords, rhythms, instruments, sections, timbre, and other elements of sound. We can completely represent a sound with these three parameters: Pitch, Rhythm, and Loudness. We will use music to listen, derive, and rehearse to these elements in rotation.

RHYTHM EXERCISE

Using the Song EIGHT DAYS A WEEK, by Lennon McCartney – (2 min, 43 sec) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VadngOGKlP0 (Youtube), play the song over your stereo.

1. Identify and clap along to the main pulse of the song (written in 4 / 4) for the whole song

(4 beats to the bar, the quarter note gets one beat), Count ||: 1 2 3 4 :||

2. Listen for the clapping already recorded on the song and clap along for the VERSE song sections which contain clapping on the main beats of 2 and 4.

The main claps are on beats 2 and 4:

3. Listen for and add the grace notes for the shuffle beat over the PRE-CHORUS section:

4. Using two kinds of loudness for your claps: soft (or piano), and loud (or forte), clap along to the song on every pulse with a soft clap, and add the rhythm we learned on top of it with a loud clap.

Where there is no clapping in the song, just quietly keep the pulse internally and use a small quiet tapping or movement.

5. A Decrescendo of your loudness or dynamics. Clap along for the whole song again on beats 2 and 4, but this time, over 4 bars, gradually reduce the loudness of your claps from loud to soft.

Inventor Creates new Fractal Chaotic Sound Synthesis, releases Video, CD, Papers

Toronto Ontario Canada. A video demo of the new CD Album2 of Electroacoustic and Computational Feedback Sound Synthesis is released, ‘Slovakian Sky Watcher‘ from the album ‘JUPITER STORMS‘. Created by Inventor / performer Campbell foster with images by award winning filmmaker Jean-Pierre Joubert.

The soundscape track ‘Slovakian Sky Watcher‘ (6:46’) features an unrelenting drum beat sequence created using feedback synthesis. It expresses the inevitable, layered with strange sky noises recorded sounding like crowds screaming, the earths crust at a breaking point, and War of the Worlds meets Michael Jackson, with our Slovakian commentator interspersed.

Video images of soldiers marching in time, people looking up apprehensively, the fury of Nature, war and its weapons, and ultimately Nature triumphing over mans’ destruction makes a poignant statement reflecting our current world.

Took some photos of the Fireworks on Ashbridges bay, with long exposure times, a tripod, and within 50 meters of the launch point – intense!

The wind streaked the fireworks with these long exposure times.

UNIVERSI AMORIS (L. All Love) soundscape bed is generated using Feedback Synthesis techniques. The sound source ’emitter’ is a forest with rain sample.

Sound pitch, time, loudness, stereophony, and reverb are grown using Computational Feedback Synthesis.

A final mastering component of exponential expansion (also a feedback technique) multiplies amplitude to conform more closely to the our biomechanical hearing systems where stimulus is the logarithm of sensation.

An interactive Futurist event appropriating the sculptural objects of the Distillery District as Instruments in the Industrial noise-art installation orchestra playable by the Operator / Performers and the participants 1 x 1. We created an electro-industrial orchestra: the STILL HORN, the FLATBEDONATOR, the SIREN, the ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC SHEET METAL FEEDBACK PHONE, and the TRUCKOPHONE. A Futurist Manifesto Sound of industrial noise and objects with modern electronics, the instruments can be played by the participants and/or the operators throughout the Futurism Today or NOT! event. There will also be the premiere of the new composition performed by members of the Nouveau Futurist Art of Noise group in a special late night concerts at 10pm, 12:30am and 4am.

‘TIME DRIFT X’ soundscape bed master for ‘XTRM UNIVRS’ electronic music suite section created using 3 operator Computational Feedback Synthesis for a live outdoor ambient interactive electroacoustic and computer music performance composition, projected video and sound commissioned for the Ontario Science Centre Star Party ‘Extreme Universe’ 12th July 2013 and premièred in the amphitheatre at OSC under the stars.

‘XTRM UNIVRS’ explores our connection to the universe through inner space at the extreme quantum power of our energetic potentials to create and explore. From our physical connection to the stars’ matter generated at its core, to the farthest reaches of our imagination lingering on the extreme edges of infinity.

Note the Topological Mixing of all sound parameters; Pitch, Time, Dynamics, and Stereophony, characteristic of this IFS chaotic system.

ABSTRACT

Soundscape ‘FBS IMAX Test’ and ‘Time Drift X’ were both selected for listening at the joint International Computer Music, and Sound and Music Computing Conference in Athens, Greece September 2014 (Joint ICMC – SMS 20141.

In order to facilitate distribution, I am releasing this track in standard MP3 format with the option to purchase the CD quality 320 kbps MP3 file on this site for a nominal amount.

Here is an attempt to create a completely self-generated iterative fractal type of sound which utilizes a non-interferential method of playing (using the butterfly effect) and relies on the iterative intelligence of a three point computational feedback loop using feedback synthesis techniques, resulting in interrelating parameters of sound including pitch, amplitude, tempo, melody, tone colour, voicing, form, and rhythm, exhibiting topological mixing of all of these parameters, and natural fractal effects of scale and self-similarity.

 Some interesting sound and sections in the resulting soundscape (min:sec’):

  • Show intro crazy organist riffs – 0:00’
  • 10,000 more organists show up – 1:50’
  • Micro fractal sonic embellishments – 3:10’
  • Seventh Chord stated in sonic parameter topological mixing – 3:33’
  • Iterative fractal Melody, repeated with multiple voicing – 4:00’
  • Melody interrupted by a car horn, then more cars, then a traffic jam – 4:14’
  • A coda of some natural fractal sonic parameters jamming about and interrelating – 5:43’

The ‘Emitter’ driving the Feedback Loop is a female voice sample loop 2.13 seconds in duration. Amplitude of the Emitter is approx -95 Dbm. Feeding the loop at these low levels produces thematic resulting sonic phenomenon, grown iteratively in the FBS loop to signal amplitudes and related to the Emitter, exhibiting the parametric vectoring, and topological blending of all sonic parameters.

A SCORE is developed to create 6.0 Soundscapes  to accompany and sonify visuals depicting the Big Bang (Birth of the Universe). collate current understandings and synthesize supportive soundscapes using electroacoustic and computational feedback synthesis methods for the large screen space film ‘In Saturn’s Rings’ (2014)5.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

An attempt to understand the birth of the Universe in a SCORE and current scientific understanding and representation of the “Big Bang” or Birth of the Universe.

Computational Feedback Synthesis is employed using unit generator software in Realtiime using a 3 operator 6 output instrument directly recording 6 audio files in synthesis.   A 6,0 playback speaker assignment is as follows: Left Front 1, Right Front 2, Centre 3, Left Rear 4, Right Rear 5, and Top speaker 6.

The sound samples and 6.0 tracks are raw (caution 0DBd program material) to be incorporated with other crowd sourced soundscapes and music for the Big Bang opening section of the film.

Generated 6.0 files are combined in a sound editor (Audacity), and mixed to 256b stereo MP3 files with adjustments of the 6 tracks panning placement as follows:
Left Front 1 – Pan Left 100%
Right Front 2 – Pan Right 100%
Centre 3 – Pan centre
Left Rear 4 – Pan Left 60%
Right Rear 5 – Pan Right 60%
Top speaker 6- Pan Left 10%.

BIG BANG SOUND

While generating the 6.0 DARK ENERGY TAKE 1 track, intention through cumulative fractal perturbations into the IFS system in a non-interferential (rarely interacting) performance occurred at 1m 34sec, where the sound of a rapid glissando and inflation type accelerating explosion followed.   This was excerpted to 6.0 tracks, and mixed as per to the following MP3 sound sample:

DISCUSSION

Before we get on the timeline and ride out the big bang, lets turn around and drive backwards through the big bang.

How Big Was the Bang?

Un-perceivably big.  Our conception of a rapid release of energy from a point of explosive material driven outward by kinetic energy until dissipated is far lacking.  This ‘Big Bang’ explosion was very dense (1090 kg/cm3), extremely rapid (1-43 Sec) expansion of an unseen force / singularity, at an extremely hot temperature (10^32 Kelvin).  Scientists say this event expanded from a point and very rapidly increased in size by a factor ~1050 in about 10^-33 seconds6.   Note that this is an argument for the starburst graphical representation of the Birth of the Universe.

Was this the unseen pervasive force and singularity manifesting space time itself, an infinite number of point source explosions; an explosion of space (all points)?  An explosion of a singularity (one point of infinite points) into all of space and time and everything (many points in observable space)

Before we board the timeline and ride out the birth of the universe, as a thought experiment, let’s turn around on the timeline and go backwards in time, through the huge explosion (in reverse) and to just before the onset.     What is there?   To create such an singular explosion must demand that an even larger amount of energy originates it.

We could possibly find a large amount of Dark Matter in the onset, then farther, the Dark Energy making up 70% or our universe. And farther back in time?

Before that, what’s driving that expansion current and pre-bang?   In my opinion the penultimate singular power driving the manifestations of existence is the Life Energy force (unexperienceably powerful and pure) then and now.

Expansion is just one attribute of a burgeoning growing living infinite universe, and one expression of the primary unseen force.   The behavior of subatomic particles and Quantum Physics has proven the strange behaviors.     Expanding to what end?  As an expression of the pervasive ground of primary Life force, into dark matter, and dark energy, energy and matter in space and time?

The first diagram in the SCORE is from researchers at The Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, who invites us to consider that “our universe may have emerged from a black hole in a higher-dimensional universe”3 , and in that spirit this article speculates from behaviours experienced and observed in electroacoustic and computational feedback synthesis.

To the left a systems diagram of Computational Feedback Synthesis, showing elements of the loop used, given there are 3 particle generator contraptions in the loop with 6 outputs, giving a richly varied growth of complex sounds.

The Emitter used was of a thunder clap, 12 sec, occasionally feeding the feedback loop at a -50 dB volume.

The sounds exhibit stereo panning identities in their gestalt topologically blended into the sound parameters of amplitude, pitch, time, and stereophony.    Topological blending is one characteristic of a chaotic system of which the electroacoustic and computational loop exhibits many.

The emitter sounds are being grown in amplitude and duplicated layer after layer, building up in a self-similar expansion, in many ways comparable to cosmic Inflation and fractal attributes of natural forms and growth.  From the Quantum audio levels to the tonal state of the frequency spectrum, vying for existence like an evolutionary natural selection.    We seed the feedback loop with our Emitter samples (Quantum pieces of audio) to grow and evolve a Soundscape.

The SCORE shows the X and Y values with the Quantum Mechanical view of the world, where Energy and Matter are on a continuum, and Space and Time are also a probablistic index range.

The X axis also shows a continuum of Dark Energy and Dark Matter (unseen), aligned and subsumed by the Energy and Matter values, existing in that same matter.

Another (unseen) value driving this axis (imho) is the directly unperceivable Life Force, driving the expressions of existence towards life.  This is depicted on the SCORE with arrows pointing into the screen of space indicating a foundational unseen force.   On the Y axis, beyond and driving the existence of space time, the Life Force is depicted with arrows also pointing into the chart.

Are the Universe, and our inner experience connected through the quantum field (dark energy & matter); a reflection of that singular growth force, driving nature and creation into life?

We must continue to search in all of nature and within ourselves for more of the effects and experience of this unseen natural force creating the quantum realm, Dark Matter and Energy, into existence, our conscious experience of it, and our own vast creative potentials.
